You wrapped Nicky and her family in love
Childhood cancer can be traumatic and terrifying. Thanks to you, Nicky had the support to get through it with her young son Jamie.
One of the parents we heard from in the recent Redkite Family Needs survey was Nicky – a loving mum of four, including little Jamie who has leukaemia.
Jamie needed a year of treatment, hundreds of kilometres away from the family’s farm. Nicky spent that time in hospital with him, but COVID-19 meant the rest of the family couldn’t visit and Nicky couldn’t go outside in case she was exposed to the virus.
“Neither of us even touched grass in 12 months,” said Nicky.
You helped keep the family strong. Your kindness meant they received counselling for their emotional and mental health. Most importantly, that help came from Redkite’s social workers, who truly understood what they were going through.
Although Jamie is now back at home, Nicky says the emotional strain is far from over. “When you get back to normal life, that’s when you start
going through all the trauma. There needs to be more help when you leave your hospital bubble – for parents, kids and siblings too.”
With your support, Redkite will be able to make more counselling available, and connect more families facing childhood cancer with each other – so nobody ever feels like they’re going through it alone.
Let’s get started
